Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our services, insurance, and what to expect during your visit.

Eye Exams

How often should I have an eye exam?

Adults should have a comprehensive eye exam every 1-2 years, depending on age and risk factors. Children should have their first exam at 6 months, then at age 3, before starting school, and annually thereafter. If you have diabetes, glaucoma, or other eye conditions, more frequent exams may be recommended.

What should I bring to my eye exam?

Please bring your current eyeglasses or contact lenses, a list of medications you're taking, your insurance cards, and any relevant medical records. If possible, also bring sunglasses for after the exam if your eyes will be dilated.

Will my eyes be dilated?

Dilation may be recommended as part of your comprehensive exam. Dilating drops allow us to examine the back of your eye more thoroughly. Dilation typically lasts 4-6 hours and may cause light sensitivity and blurry near vision. We recommend bringing sunglasses and arranging a ride if you're concerned.

How long does an eye exam take?

A comprehensive eye exam typically takes 45-90 minutes, depending on the complexity of testing needed. Contact lens exams and fittings may require additional time. Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete paperwork.

Glasses

How long does it take to get new glasses?

Most prescription eyeglasses are ready within 7-14 business days, depending on the complexity of your prescription and lens options chosen. Some simple prescriptions may be available sooner. Progressive lenses and specialty lenses may take longer.

What's the difference between progressive and bifocal lenses?

Bifocal lenses have a visible line separating distance and reading zones. Progressive lenses (no-line bifocals) provide a seamless transition between distance, intermediate, and near vision without visible lines. Progressives offer a more natural viewing experience but may require an adjustment period.

How do I know which frames suit my face?

Our trained opticians will help you select frames that complement your face shape, skin tone, and lifestyle. Generally, frames should contrast with your face shape (round frames for angular faces, angular frames for round faces). We encourage you to try many options!

Can I use my old frames for new lenses?

In many cases, yes! If your frames are in good condition and can accommodate your new prescription, we can often fit new lenses into them. However, some older frames may be brittle or unable to hold certain lens types. Our opticians will evaluate your frames.

Contact Lenses

I've never worn contacts. Can I learn?

Absolutely! Most people can successfully wear contact lenses. Our staff will teach you how to properly insert, remove, and care for your lenses. We allow plenty of time for training and won't let you leave until you're comfortable with the process.

What's the difference between daily and monthly contacts?

Daily disposable lenses are worn once and discarded, requiring no cleaning. Monthly lenses are worn daily for up to 30 days and require nightly cleaning and proper storage. Dailies are more convenient and often healthier, while monthlies are typically more cost-effective.

Can I sleep in my contact lenses?

Most contact lenses are not approved for overnight wear. Sleeping in contacts significantly increases the risk of eye infections and complications. Some extended-wear lenses are approved for overnight use, but this should be discussed with your doctor.

Why do I need a separate contact lens exam?

Contact lenses sit directly on your eyes and require specific measurements for proper fit, including corneal curvature and diameter. A contact lens exam also evaluates your tear film and eye health for safe lens wear. This is different from an eyeglass prescription.

Insurance & Payment

What insurance plans do you accept?

We accept most major vision insurance plans including VSP, EyeMed, Davis Vision, and many others. We also accept medical insurance for eye health conditions. Please call our office to verify your specific plan coverage.

What's the difference between vision and medical insurance?

Vision insurance covers routine eye care like annual exams and eyewear. Medical insurance covers eye health issues like infections, injuries, glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease. We'll help determine which insurance to bill based on the nature of your visit.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, we offer CareCredit and in-house payment plans for qualifying purchases. We also accept HSA and FSA accounts. Ask our staff about available financing options.

What if I don't have insurance?

We offer competitive self-pay rates for patients without insurance. We also have special packages and promotions available. Quality eye care should be accessible to everyone.

Services

Do you offer LASIK surgery?

We provide comprehensive LASIK consultations and co-management services. We partner with leading LASIK surgeons and can determine if you're a good candidate for vision correction surgery. We provide pre-operative evaluations and post-operative care.

What is myopia management?

Myopia management includes specialized treatments to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children. Options include orthokeratology (overnight reshaping lenses), specialty soft contact lenses, and low-dose atropine drops. Early intervention can help reduce the risk of high myopia later in life.

Do you treat eye emergencies?

Yes, we handle many eye emergencies including eye injuries, infections, sudden vision changes, and foreign body removal. If you experience a sudden vision emergency, call our office immediately. For life-threatening emergencies, call 911.

Can you treat dry eyes?

Yes, we offer comprehensive dry eye evaluations and treatments including artificial tears, prescription eye drops, punctal plugs, warm compress therapy, and lifestyle modifications. Dry eye is a chronic condition that often requires ongoing management.

Appointments

How do I schedule an appointment?

You can schedule online through our website, call our office during business hours, or use our patient portal. We offer convenient appointment times including some early morning, evening, and weekend availability.

What is your cancellation policy?

We request at least 24 hours notice for appointment cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations or no-shows may result in a fee. We understand emergencies happen and will work with you on a case-by-case basis.

Can I bring my children to my appointment?

We recommend arranging childcare if possible, as our exams require your full attention and some tests are conducted in darkened rooms. However, we understand this isn't always possible and welcome children if needed.

Do you see patients on weekends?

Yes, we offer Saturday appointments for your convenience. Saturday hours may be limited, so we recommend booking in advance. We are closed on Sundays.
